Aim:


This Year 2 specialist course will provide qualified Fitness Professionals with the skills, knowledge and competencies to design group exercise classes and prescribe progressive exercise programmes suitable for independent older adults of varying levels of fitness in a gym, leisure centre or community environment.



Course Details:


All content, including lectures, handouts, sample assessments, videos, class plans and exercises etc. will be delivered and accessed through a specially developed e-learning website specifically designed for the module. This e-learning website will contain automated PowerPoint tutorials on all the theoretical aspects along with short electronic self-assessments which will allow students to gauge their progress as they work through the module. Practical elements including various activities and games suitable for older adults will be presented through video.



The Active Ageing specialist module will be assessed as follows:


On-line theory assessment (20 questions - 30 minutes) 15%


Work Experience Learning Portfolio (25%)

This portfolio is a detailed journal of 4 group sessions with older adults including logs of dates, venue, number of participants (minimum 4 adults per session), health screening and detailed class plans for 2 sessions with an independent, healthy group of older adults and 2 sessions with a seated group of older adults.  Also included in this portfolio is a reflective summary evaluating your performance and progress during each activity sessions with your chosen group and your personal and professional development throughout the module.


Submission of 2 Practical Sessions on Video (2 x 30%)

Video 1: Independent, healthy older adults (sitting to standing) - 30 minutes in duration

Video 2: Mixed ability chair-bound older adult group (seated only) - 30 minutes in duration
