Overview

Aim:


This Year 2 specialist course will provide qualified Fitness Professionals with the skills and knowledge to design, plan and lead safe, enjoyable and effective health-related activity sessions to children. A Children’s Fitness Specialist teaches group fitness classes to children from 4 – 12 years.  You may choose to work in the local community, local schools as a guest Specialist, after school centres, summer camps etc. There are no classroom tutorials involved with this specialist module, it is completely e-learning to be completed from home through the student learning support website with a dedicated Course Leader/Mentor liasing with you throughout your studies. This module is available in all academic semesters. Garda vetting is required.


Course Details


All content, including lectures, handouts, sample assessments, videos, class plans and exercises etc. will be delivered and accessed through a specially developed e-learning website specifically designed for the module. This e-learning website will contain automated PowerPoint tutorials on all the theoretical aspects along with short electronic self-assessments which will allow students to gauge their progress as they work through the module. Practical elements including various activities and games suitable for children will be presented through video.


Students will also be required to carry out assigned work experience, which includes a detailed work experience report, submission of a video showing practical teaching/instructional ability and an online summative written assessment.


The Active Kids specialist module will be assessed as follows:


On-line theory assessment (30 minutes) 20%


Work Experience Learning Portfolio 80%


This portfolio is a detailed journal of the following:


  • Observation sessions - You are required to observe two health-related activity sessions or a children’s sport coaching session providing a detailed evaluation of both sessions you have observed.

  

  • You will also be required to plan, organise and teach 5 children’s activity sessions (45 minutes each in duration).  Two of these sessions will be recorded on video. Your portfolio will include logs of dates, venue, screening, planning, class management and include detailed class plans for 2 of the 5 sessions. Also included in this portfolio is a reflective summary evaluating your performance and progress during each activity session with your chosen group and your personal and professional development throughout the module.


  • Submission of 2 Practical Sessions on Video
